For the past several days I have made a physical note to write a post, but each time have gotten caught up, so today is my day. Since my last post I “celebrated” my 28th birthday, finished my second week of classes, studied my buns off for the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification exam (I plan to take on Friday), worked for both Sport-Scan and the YMCA, and have kept up with Crossfit (missing only one day due to muscle soreness).
I vowed to myself that by the end of my 28th year I would be in the best overall shape of my life. I want to be able to tackle any physical activity without and restraints. I also would like to have my MS in Exercise Physiology completed and hopefully have a career started. I see too many people in my field who are not all that healthy or just lift and lack the overall fitness. That is not what I want. I also read a post from Vern Gambetta where he said he swims a minute for every year on his birthday. That may be a new tradition next year.
I have begun to see various improvements during my Crossfit workouts. My form for the Olympic lifts (e.g. power cleans, clean and jerks) have become smoother and my ability to work through my mental pain is also improving. I have almost completed one straight month and am looking forward to how my body reacts as I move forward. I have a few professors who feel Crossfit is too much and does not give the body enough time to recover. As I mentioned earlier, I took off Thursday to rest my sore muscles, and I believe that is the key to Crossfit. As in any form of physical exercise, one must listen to their body and cannot be afraid to take a day or several days off to let it heal and rest.
When I got to the gym on Friday, everybody was talking about “Fran” the WOD, which had not been prescribed for about a year. The white board read as follows:
21-15-9
Thrusters
Pullups
I have learned over the past month that when WOD’s consist of two exercises, no matter how simple they may appear, they usually kick your butt. I have yet to figure out the “kipping” pullup so I had to complete my pullups from a dead-hang and eventually completed jumping pullups (the bar is just out of reach over my head so even the jumping pullups are a challenge). I finished Fran in 9:53 which I was happy with but am eager to learn to kip so I can improve WOD’s that include pullups. Yesterday’s WOD was the following:
As a 4 person team complete the following:
FireBase Loop (1000m)
300 Kettlebell Swings (50#M/30#F)
400 Pushups
500 Situps
600 Air Squats
5 Rope Climbs per team member
For Time. *Only 2 team members may work at a time.
I do not have my notebook in front of me, but my team finished first with a time around 33:00 minutes. We split the group up and alternated the exercises; pretty much doing sets of ten until we completed that exercise, and then moved on to the next. I cannot remember the last time I did rope climbs. My technique was pretty bad to I did not have good footwork which led to me usually predominantly my upper body. My arms were on fire following the 5 climbs.
I was going to talk about my classes, but I really need to get back to studying. I will attempt to take a break and post again later today, but don’t hold me to that. Enjoy your Sunday!
